Procedure:

Drilling is one of the most common jobs that needs doing around the house. Observe the following tips to avoid drilling holes that are slanted or too big.

1

Pay attention to the subsurface. When drilling, you have to choose different drill bits and drilling methods depending on the material. A conventional cordless drill is basically sufficient for easier jobs (e.g. drilling in plasterboard and porous concrete).

2

For classical masonry you will need a more powerful impact drill; a rotary hammer is used for drilling in concrete walls. The following basic rule applies: The more powerful the motor, the wider the range of applications.

3

Better safe than sorry: Use a detector to search for power cables and water pipes in walls before drilling.

4

Wear protective glasses and gloves when drilling.

5

To ensure that no slanted holes are drilled, always position the drill bit tip perpendicular to the material surface and then start the machine. Do not apply pressure to the machine until the drill bit has gripped firmly in the material.

6

Stick a piece of masking tape to the drilling position when drilling in delicate surfaces (e.g. tiles). The rough surface of the adhesive tape prevents the drill bit from slipping off.
